CBD has alleged benefits for health and pain relief, and according to Surendran et al. (2021), it acts as an anti-aging agent. You may wonder whether CBD oil can help prevent wrinkles from developing or, better still, whether it can reverse the signs of aging.

The outward signs of aging can be very distressing to an individual in an increasingly visual society where most people want to hold on tightly to their youth. As a result, people are always looking for inexpensive and less invasive ways to curb the aging process. Although there are many products available today to help reverse the signs of aging, most of them are made using chemicals and preservatives and don’t offer similar results for everyone, nor are the results long-lasting. Let’s discuss the role of CBD in the anti-aging process.

What is CBD?

Burstein (2015) gave an overview of the effects of CBD on the human body. CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the most abundant cannabinoids in the cannabis sativa plant. Hemp and marijuana are the most common plants under the cannabis sativa species, and both contain CBD. It lacks hallucinatory or psychoactive properties. Therefore you won’t get high as a result of consuming CBD products. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the cannabinoid responsible for a high or buzz. Marijuana plants have higher THC levels as compared to hemp plants. As a result, CBD derived from marijuana plants may contain more traces of THC than the ones derived from hemp. However, research states that CBD reduces the potency of THC. Therefore, even if a product contains trace levels of THC, there’s a possibility that the CBD in it will cancel its psychoactive effects.

The United States federal government lifted the ban on CBD and allowed its use in various forms such as gummies, salves, sprays, tinctures, topical gels, and lotions. Consequently, a cap was laid on CBD products with a THC level of only up to 0.3% to be legalized and sold by government licensed CBD companies. Following the legalization of CBD, the cannabis market has experienced a rise in CBD products in all forms and aid in treating various ailments. Blanton et al. (2019) noted that CBD could be found in various pain and discomfort alleviation products like creams, relief sprays, and relief roll-ons.

How Does CBD Work?

The human body naturally produces cannabinoids called endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters that bind with the body’s cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) to control and balance internal body functions such as sleep, appetite, mood, etc. All of these take place in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).  When the body is out of balance due to stress or illness, the ECS works to get the body back to order.

For external use like CBD topicals, CBD is claimed to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pain relief properties. The study by Dawidowicz et al. (2021) stated that CBD could be a more powerful and potent antioxidant than vitamins C and E. CBD is regarded as a potential treatment for anti-aging since antioxidants reduce free radical damage and help slow the aging process.

Anti-Aging Benefits of CBD

CBD oil helps reduce signs of the aging process and combat wrinkles in the following ways:

CBD as a Powerful Antioxidant

Antioxidants fight free radicals in the body that cause aging and cell degeneration. Free radicals cause the collagen tissues in the skin to break down faster by countering free radicals in the body. As a result, the antioxidant benefits of CBD help slow down collagen loss and help the skin retain its natural firmness and elasticity. Baumann (2007) noted that antioxidants could also help provide relief from damage caused by other things such as UV rays and pollution or lifestyle factors such as drinking, smoking, poor nutrition, and a lack of a CBD skincare routine.

Promotes Sebum Production

Sebum or oil production in the face is one of the keys to dealing with signs of aging and acne. CBD influences the oil glands to maintain the correct level of sebum production. Although sebum keeps the body moisturized, it can also cause clogging of the skin pores, resulting in acne breakouts. Therefore, correct sebum production means smoother, more supple, and less sensitive skin.

Fights Inflammation

CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can help treat skin inflammation, reduce redness, and relax the skin, thus minimizing damage such as wrinkles, ruddy skin tone, and dullness. Also, anecdotal evidence shows that CBD’s inflammatory properties help reduce the symptoms of particular skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. CBD users claim that CBD consumption improves the itching, rashes, swelling, and red patches that result from skin inflammation. As a result, the skin may appear younger and healthier.

CBD’s Moisturizing Properties

It is commonly known that drying out of the skin is a major contribution. Anecdotal evidence shows that CBD also has moisturizing properties. Dry skin reveals more wrinkles and fine lines. Therefore, CBD applied topically together with other essential ingredients aids the skin in producing important oils to help preserve its moisture and thus reveal a youthful glow.

CBD May Help to Relax and Reduce Stress

Although research into CBD is fairly limited, anecdotal evidence shows that through its positive effects on the ECS, CBD tries to balance the production of cortisol, the steroid hormone that produces stress. When cortisol production is regulated, it improves an individual’s conduct and mood and maintains stress levels in check. Fewer stress levels keep the wrinkles off your face, making your skin appear youthful and more relaxed.

CBD is no longer just for pain and anxiety. The market is flooded with CBD-infused products that help negate the effects of aging. CBD can be a great option when looking for new and wholesome ways to enhance the skin’s firmness and reclaim the original glow without turning to chemical treatments and adverse effects. The antioxidant properties of CBD and its ability to work closely with the ECS ensure the body systems are balanced to help keep fit and beautiful inside out. Anecdotal evidence shows that CBD is a potent compound that can help reverse signs of aging. Consequently, the fact that plant proteins and phytonutrients have been used for ages to enhance skin and health bears witness to the fact that plants and their compounds can be a powerful ingredient in helping retain youth and skin health.
